Getting Around Avignon
Avignon has a wide expanse of pedestrian only streets and walkways. It is also pretty compact
allowing leisurely exploration on foot. Visitors who don't
want to use a hire car, or explore on foot can opt to use the city’s
public bus services or taxis. Bus services are regular and reliable and cover
much of the area. Taxis are more expensive than the bus, however they do provide a
door-to-door service.
On
Foot
Most locations in Avignon are reasonably walkable, and as Avignon is
fairly compact it allows you to leisurely explore by foot.
Bike
Getting around Avignon by bicycle is a great way to explore the city
and bicycles can be hired for the day at many outlets. Visitors have an opportunity to escape the
city, and to discover just outside it a wonderful landscape which may otherwise go
un-noticed.
Bus
Public bus services in the Avignon region are provided by TCRA (Transports en
Commun de la Région d’Avignon), with services to many historic towns. Buses commence at 07:00 and operate until
19:40 from Monday to Saturday, with a restricted service on Sundays. Services operate longer hours during the
Avignon Festival and reduced ticket prices are in operation.
The majority of bus services terminate at the centrally located Place d'Horloge,
close to most of the city's popular attractions.
Passengers can pre-purchase weekend bus passes and carnets of 10 tickets at city tabacs, from shops displaying
the TCRA logo and its two bus stations. Tickets must then be stamped on boarding or payment can be made on the bus
itself.
There are also express bus services from the airport and also the mainline TGV station which is the arrival
point of direct Eurostar services from London.
By car
Getting around Avignon by car is pretty easy compared to many other popular towns and
cities in the South of France. There is plentiful parking both in the city and also just outside
it, where park and ride schemes are in place, not only that but there are no nasty one way systems to confuse
the visitor.
In June, however during the Avignon
Festival there are traffic restrictions in place. This is somewhat eased as extra buses, with an increased frequency are provided.
Car hire is available at at the airport and train
station and many locations throughout the city.
Train
Trains are available into and out of the region
only. There are no cross-city services in Avignon.
Taxi
Taxis are readily available for hire in Avignon and are centrally operated by Taxi Radio
Avignonnais. Cabs can be hailed curb side or booked by telephone (tel: +33 4 9082 2020). Taxi ranks can be found at
Raspail, St Lazare and Place Pie as well as in front of the new TGV rail station and the main central
station.
